“A child with autism sees things differently than we do. Perceives things in a different light. Can perceive things in ways we could never imagine”
– Unknown

It used to be believed that Asperger’s Syndrome (ASP) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) were the same condition. However, the diagnostic criteria for Asperger’s are no longer available, and the indications and symptoms associated with a diagnosis of Asperger’s have been reassigned to ASD. It is important to note that Asperger’s Syndrome / Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is classified as a spectrum disorder, which means that the manifestation of the disorder can vary significantly from individual to individual. Some people may only exhibit a few of the characteristics listed above, while others may present a complex range of social, communication and behavioural difficulties. Our Autism Therapists at Blanchardstown Therapy Centre are happy to support you on this journey!

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may experience a variety of symptoms and challenges over the course of their lives, which can range from mild to severe. Although two individuals may share some characteristics, their experiences can vary significantly.

Social Challenges of ASD

  1. Difficulties with Interactions: Interaction difficulties are a common hallmark of ASD. People with ASD may struggle to maintain eye contact, comprehend nonverbal signals such as body language and facial expressions, and comprehend the subtleties of social communication. Conversations can be difficult to initiate and maintain, resulting in social isolation and potential misunderstanding. These difficulties can be attributed to differences in how people with ASD process and react to social information. However, with appropriate support, therapy and strategies, people with ASD can improve their social skills and manage interactions more effectively, thus improving their ability to interact with others and participate fully in social settings.

  2. Limited Interest in Others: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may exhibit a lack of interest in others. They may be more focused on their own interests or routines, and may appear to be unaware of the emotions and needs of others. This lack of interest does not necessarily indicate a lack of care, but rather a difference in social processing patterns. It is important to note that ASD individuals may have a distinct way of interacting with the world and their social behaviours may not always be in line with conventional expectations. Nevertheless, with the right guidance and support, individuals with ASD can learn to demonstrate empathy and form meaningful relationships with others, thereby bridging the divide between their individualized perspective and the wider social world.

  3. Diminished Empathy: People with ASD often struggle to empathise with others and respond appropriately to their emotions. These empathy issues can lead to social misunderstandings and communication difficulties. It’s important to note that this lack of empathy isn’t due to lack of care, but rather differences in how people perceive social and emotional signals. People with ASD may struggle to identify subtle facial or body language cues, but their empathy can be sustained and improved through specific interventions and support. Developing empathy skills is a key component in ASD therapy and education. Developing empathy skills allows people with ASD to better interact with others and better manage their lives.

Typical ASD Behaviours

  1. Repetitive Actions and Behaviours: Repetitive behavior is one of the most common signs of ASD. It can come in many forms. For example, a person with ASD may fluff their hands repeatedly, rock, spin objects around, or insist on adhering to a particular routine. These repetitive behaviors may seem strange to others, but it’s important to remember that these behaviors serve a specific purpose for an individual with ASD. Repetitive behaviors often provide a sense of comfort and security. For someone with ASD, repetitive behaviors can be a way to cope with sensory and social difficulties. It can help them feel more in control and secure in an environment that can often feel overwhelming. Recognizing and respecting repetitive behaviours is an important part of supporting an individual’s well-being.

  2. Concentrating on particular interests: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often exhibit an intense focus on particular interests, commonly referred to as “special interests.” These interests can range from scientific and technological interests to artistic, musical, or personal hobbies. These interests may seem strange to others, but they provide individuals with ASD with a sense of comfort and motivation, as well as an outlet for self-expression. Stimulating these interests and incorporating them into therapy and day-to-day life can be a powerful tool for engaging and connecting with people on the spectrum, leveraging their strengths, and contributing to their well-being.

  3. Sensitivities to sensory stimuli: Individuals with ASD may experience heightened or reduced sensitivity to sensory inputs, such as sight, sound, texture, taste, and smell. For many, these seemingly harmless sensations in their environment can be disabling or even unbearable. For example, bright lights, loud sounds, particular clothing textures, or strong smells can cause extreme discomfort, stress, or anxiety. These sensitivities can significantly impact an individual’s daily life, making it challenging to navigate sensory-rich environments or even to carry out everyday tasks such as eating or dressing. It is essential to recognise and accommodate these sensitivities in order to provide assistance and comfort to individuals with ASD, enabling them to better engage in their environment and activities.
